Senior IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhawra has been appointed as the new director general of Punjab Police, an official order announced on Saturday.
The order came just hours before assembly election dates were announced in five states, including Punjab.

Chattopadhyaya along with 13 other police and civilian officers appeared in Ferozepur on Friday before a three-member panel formed by the Union Home Ministry to investigate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “serious failings” in security during his tour to Ferozepur.
The Charanjit Singh Channi government selected 1987 Batch Officer Bhawra from a panel of three officers shortlisted by the Union Civil Service Commission.
The other two officers on the panel were senior IPS officers Dinkar Gupta and Prabodh Kumar.
“On the panel review received from the UPSC, the Governor of Punjab is pleased to appoint Viresh Kumar Bhawra, IPS, as the Punjab Police Director General (Head of Police Force),” the order reads. .

A few days ago, the UPSC sent a panel of three IPS officers – Dinkar Gupta, VK Bhawra and Prabodh Kumar for the appointment of a regular Director General of Punjab Police.
According to Supreme Court guidelines, of the three IPS officers shortlisted by the UPSC, the state government must finalize the name of an officer for appointment as a regular DGP.
The Punjab government had sent a list of 10 IPS officers, including Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, for the shortlist of the three-officer panel.
According to SC guidelines, only an officer who has left at least six months of service can be considered for the post of DGP.
UPSC had taken October 5, 2021 as the deadline for DGP selection and as Chattopadhyaya was due to retire on March 31, 2022, his name did not find a place in the panel.
After Charanjit Singh Channi took office as the new Chief Minister last September, 1988 IPS officer Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota was appointed DGP to replace Dinkar Gupta who was the police chief of state when Amarinder Singh was the Chief Minister.
But Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu was against Sahota’s nomination.
